What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition in which males experience the enlargement of glandular breast tissues. This condition may affect newborns, boys during puberty, and older men. It is caused by an imbalance in sex hormones, causing breast tissue to grow. Certain medications may also trigger gynecomastia. Because glandular breast tissues are the cause for gynecomastia, losing weight will not remedy the issue. This condition can cause self-consciousness and embarrassment in many men, as well as have a negative impact on social functioning, mental health, and eating behaviors. Common symptoms of gynecomastia include:

  • Swelling and tenderness of the breasts
  • Increased size of areolas
  • Asymmetrical chest tissue

Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery can help to remove excess male breast tissue for a flatter, more masculine chest. This procedure can help men feel comfortable removing their shirt in public, as well as boost self-confidence.

This procedure can be done using excision, liposuction, or a combination of both. For men with ample excess fatty tissue in their breasts, liposuction may be used alone to reduce breast size. In the case that glandular tissue is the primary cause for larger breasts, excision will be used. Excision patterns will vary depending on your individual condition. In some cases, liposuction and excision may be used together to achieve a flatter chest contour.

Recovery

Following gynecomastia surgery, you will need to wear a special compression garment to help minimize swelling and ensure optimal results. Patients should avoid lifting their arms up vertically and vigorous shoulder movements for the first couple of days. The overall recovery time will vary based on how severe your condition was and the extent of your procedure. It is important to follow our specific post-op instructions to ensure a quick and safe recovery.
