Many Facial Rejuvenation Options

None of us are getting any younger, and unfortunately, many of our faces are getting even older than the rest of us. If you are unhappy with the aged appearance of your face, you may be considering facial rejuvenation procedures. In the past, this almost always meant a plastic surgery procedure, but in recent years, the popularity of nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures has improved immensely, making many people think that they have replaced plastic surgery. This is not true: instead, the two types of procedures work together to give us many more options for facial rejuvenation than in the past.

The best way to determine which procedure is right for you is through consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. This page contains some basic information about the value of surgical and nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures, but it cannot make recommendations for you based on your personal symptoms of aging, your tissue, or cosmetic goals. To talk to our team about your facial rejuvenation options, please schedule a consultation today.

Advantages of Nonsurgical Facial Rejuvenation

Nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, dermal fillers, Kybella, Ultherapy, and Silhouette Instalift have increased in popularity because they do actually work, providing noticeable and natural-looking results. In addition, they have a number of advantages, including:

  • Little or no downtime, discomfort, or risk
  • Inexpensive
  • Flexibility: can be used to target minor symptoms of facial aging and some symptoms surgery does not treat

The main disadvantage of nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments is that they may not give the level of results you desire, and when they do the results are generally temporary. BOTOX® Cosmetic, for example, gives results that last 3-4 months and dermal fillers may last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the formula. However, results from Kybella, Ultherapy, and Silhouette Instalift are meant to be long-lasting.

“I had an appointment for botox and of course everything was amazing! Everyone in Dr. Gawley's office is the best!  I also get my facial peels, vitamin B serum, and sunscreen here! - Lisa L.”

Advantages of Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

During the early years of the nonsurgical revolution in facial rejuvenation, surgical procedures declined, but in recent years they have resurged as people learn that there are some things only surgery can accomplish. Nothing but a facelift or brow lift can elevate sagging facial tissues. The other major advantage of surgical facial rejuvenation is that the results are typically very long-lasting, often 10 years or more.
Because they have long-lasting results the price of surgical facial rejuvenation is actually comparable to that of nonsurgical procedures over the lifetime of the result. With plastic surgery financing, it is often possible to get a monthly payment that is also comparable to the cost of nonsurgical treatments as well.

Combining Treatments

The most important principle to remember is that facial aging is not just one symptom, but often a combination of symptoms, and successful treatment often involves a combination of treatments as well. For example, laser skin resurfacing is often an excellent complement to a facelift. While the facelift elevates sagging tissue and eliminates deep facial folds, it cannot correct the thin, crepey appearance of the skin, but laser skin resurfacing can. Together they give great results that, with periodic retreatments with the laser may last for a decade or more.
