If you have recently lost a significant amount of weight due to diet, exercise, or gastric bypass surgery, you may be thrilled with the pounds you’ve shed, but disappointed by the sagging excess skin left behind. Often, certain areas of the body will retain stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to your weight loss efforts at all, and unfortunately become more noticeable as you lose more weight.

For these reasons, many patients seek out body contouring to help them refine their body’s overall look after weight loss. Body contouring may involve more than one plastic surgery procedure, as it is performed with an eye to the overall tone and shape of your body. The most common procedures used by our surgeons in body contouring include liposuction and tummy tucks (abdominoplasty).

BODY CONTOURING CANDIDACY

The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for body contouring surgery is to schedule a consultation with our board certified plastic surgeons. However, you can also consider whether or not you meet the following criteria:

  • Stable weight – Ideally, your weight should be stable for at least one year, with no further weight loss expected. Optimal results are achieved when body contouring is performed approximately two years after you start a significant weight loss program. This allows your skin to shrink as much as possible naturally, and for your nutrition to stabilize.
  • Overall health – Are you in sound metabolic health? Do you suffer from any chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes? Patients in poor health are generally not good candidates for body contouring. You will need to obtain approval from your primary care physician before proceeding with surgery.
  • Smoking – If you are a smoker, you must quit at least six weeks prior to surgery. Smoking slows your body’s healing process and will increase the risk of serious complications.
  • Expectations – While surgery can markedly improve the shape of your physique, body contouring cannot turn back the clock on your skin. You should not expect yourself to look as you did in your teens or twenties. It can, however, help you look your best at your current age.

If you meet the above conditions, body contouring can be a great way of achieving the look you were striving for when you first began your weight loss regimen. After reaching your target weight, don’t be discouraged by loose skin or an uneven body tone. Celebrate your accomplishment by helping your body look its best.
