Breast Reduction

A reduction mammoplasty removes excess breast fat, tissue and skin

Breasts that are too large and heavy can be very painful and can cause serious health problems. At Gawley Plastic Surgery we understand the very real discomfort that large breasts can cause and offer breast reduction surgery for patients’ comfort and well being.

A Breast Reduction can both help alleviate pain from breasts that are too large, and make your breasts more proportionate to your body.

Am I a Good Candidate for A Breast Reduction?

During your consultation, our surgeons will make sure that a breast reduction can meet your goals. Breast reduction surgery is designed to address:

  • Breasts that are too large for your frame
  • Heavy, pendulous breasts that you find uncomfortable or less than ideal aesthetically
  • One breast being larger than the other
  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by overly large breasts

A good candidate for this procedure is also able to withstand general anesthesia used during surgery, be a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations about what a breast lift procedure can accomplish.

Benefits of a Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, or Reduction Mammoplasty, can be a life changing surgery for patients struggling disproportionally large or heavy breasts. A breast reduction simply means bringing your breasts into balance with the rest of your body. After surgery, you will have beautiful, healthy looking breasts, and the relief you experience will show. A breast reduction can help ease back pain, rashes, pain from bra straps, difficulty breathing and more.

Most men don’t talk about it, but enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia) are a very common condition affecting about 40% to 60% of men. Unfortunately, many men find it deeply embarrassing and suffer silently rather than seeking help. If you are living with gynecomastia, our surgeons at Gawley Plastic Surgery can give you a flatter, firmer chest.

Breast Experts

Both Dr. Gawley and Dr. Geoghegan are cosmetic and reconstructive experts when it comes to breast surgery. They are passionate about helping patients achieve both the look they desire and long-lasting, natural results. During your consultation, your surgeon will take a unique approach and work with you to select the right implants for your body and desired outcome.

Complimentary Procedures

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes unresponsive fat and excess skin, and tightens muscles.

Abdominoplasty is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle, but it can correct the problems which are beyond your control by:

  • Removing stubborn pockets of fat
  • Removing excess skin
  • Tightening muscles
  • Diastasis recti after pregnancy

Liposuction

Liposuction is a very popular body sculpting procedure. Stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise can be removed from most areas of the body, giving you smoother, more desirable contours. Gawley Plastic Surgery recommends tumescent liposuction to qualifying patients.

Choosing Your Procedure

During your consultation, our surgeons will make sure the breast reduction procedure is right for you. If it is, you can rest assured that we will proceed with your safety and cosmetic objectives in mind at all times.

Recovery & Results From Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia. The surgery lasts about two to four hours. During your procedure, our team will remove fat and glandular tissue. The skin will be tightened for firmness and a beautiful shape. Your breasts will be lighter and firmer and in beautiful proportion with the rest of your body.

After your procedure, you will be sent home with bandages around your incision sites to help reduce swelling and minimize bleeding. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions for what you can and cannot do immediately after surgery and in the weeks to come.

The recovery process varies from patient to patient based on the extent of the procedure and your ability to heal. In general, you will need to avoid strenuous activity for about four weeks, although many patients begin to feel like themselves a few days after their procedure.

At the end of the day, the results of a breast lift procedure speak for themselves, as it brings the size of your breasts into proportion with the rest of your body.

Breast Reduction FAQs

While there is no guarantee how each patient will scar, most patients are pleasantly surprised with the minimal scarring after their procedure. Scars are typically around the areola and in an inverted T or anchor pattern beneath the breast. Depending on the patient’s skin quality, we can sometimes offer a short scar breast reduction.

Gawley Plastic Surgery does not accept insurance for breast reduction, but we do have financing options available.

If you plan to breastfeed, we recommend that you wait to have breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction can interfere with your ability to breastfeed. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can significantly alter the size and shape of your breasts. Some women lose volume after pregnancy and no longer need breast reduction but could benefit from a breast lift instead.

Gawley Plastic Surgery recommends waiting until you are at least 18 years old and your body has finished developing to have any kind of cosmetic surgery. However, in a few rare cases, very large breasts which develop early can cause severe back problems and skeletal deformity. Under those circumstances, breast reduction may be appropriate at a younger age to prevent life-long health problems.
