Liposuction

Liposuction is a body sculpting procedure
to remove stubborn pockets of fat

Liposuction can target stubborn fat that has not responded to diet and exercise, or can be used in combination with other surgical procedures for additional contouring.

Stubborn fat can be removed from most areas of the body, giving you smoother, more desirable contours. Gawley Plastic Surgery recommends tumescent liposuction to qualifying patients.

Am I a Good Candidate
for Liposuction?

If you are within 25 pounds of your ideal weight, your weight is stable, and you are looking to remove stubborn fat, then Liposuction may be right for you. Liposuction is a very effective way to sculpt your body, giving you the beautiful contours you desire.

A good candidate for this procedure is also able to withstand general anesthesia used during surgery, be in good overall health, be a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations about what a facelift procedure can accomplish.

Liposuction is not appropriate for everyone. Gawley Plastic Surgery does Our surgeons do not recommend liposuction for patients with the following conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Lung disease
  • Clotting disorders
  • Heart disease
  • Poor circulation
  • Obesity

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction is not an alternative to diet and exercise, but it can remove stubborn pockets of fat that have not responded to a healthy lifestyle. Areas that can be treated with liposuction include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, waist, knees, upper arms and neck.

Liposuction can be performed alone or to complement other procedures such as a breast reduction, tummy tuck mommy makeover, facelift and more.

Complimentary Procedures

Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover is specialized combination of body contouring surgical procedures.

Our mommy makeovers offer the perfect complement of treatments to give you your pre-pregnancy body back and help you look your very best.

Our surgeons will help you choose the combination of procedures that will give you the body you desire which may include a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast lift with augmentation.

Breast Reduction

Liposuction can often be performed alongside a breast reduction for extra contouring. Sometimes excess stubborn fat around the breast tissue, typically around the armpits, needs to be removed to enhance your results.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty,  removes unresponsive fat and excess skin, and tightens muscles.

Abdominoplasty is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle, but it can correct the problems which are beyond your control by:

  • Removing stubborn pockets of fat
  • Removing excess skin
  • Tightening muscles
  • Diastasis recti after pregnancy

Non-Surgical

Depending on how much fat is being removed and the health of your skin, you may need additional skin tightening procedures to achieve your full body contouring results. A series of Morpheus8 and FaceTite/Bodytite can be performed alongside liposuction for additional skin tightening.

Choosing Your Procedure

During your initial consultation, one of our surgeons will evaluate the condition of your skin and your overall health. After listening to your goals and concerns, they will recommend the facelift options that will best achieve the results you desire.

Liposuction can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck or breast reduction.

Our surgeons believe it’s important for patients to be well-educated about the risks associated with any cosmetic surgery, including facelift.

Recovery & Results From Liposuction

Liposuction is an excellent complimentary procedure to most cosmetic procedures. Recovery will vary if you get liposuction as a standalone procedure. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions for what you can and cannot do immediately after surgery and in the weeks to come.

The liposuction procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you are able to go home after liposuction is completed, but it is important to give your body time to recovery by taking a week off work and avoiding strenuous activities for several weeks.

The recovery process varies from patient to patient based on the extent of the procedure and your ability to heal. Once you have been cleared to return to work, you may think your liposuction recovery is complete, but it’s important to remember your body is still healing. It may take as long as 4-6 weeks to completely recover. During your recovery period, you will want to gradually return to your exercise routine, clearing activities with our team before you add them to your routine. Also remember to keep wearing your compression garment according to instructions.

Some of your results may be visible immediately after surgery, but your results will continue to improve during the recovery process. You may see lumpiness or asymmetry, and may experience numbness or localized discomfort, but these should pass by in a few months.

At the end of the day, the natural results of a liposuction procedure speak for themselves. You can see what our surgeons have achieved for other patients by browsing our before-and-after photos to get an idea of what this procedure could mean for you.

Liposuction FAQs

Liposuction can remove unwanted fat from virtually anywhere on your body. It can address large areas such as the thighs and buttocks, or very small precise pockets of fat such as those on the face or under the chin.

Liposuction is appropriate for patients who are within 25 pounds of their ideal weight and whose weight is stable. You also need to be in good overall health.

Any procedure will carry some risks. We minimize the risks by proper patient screening. Our surgeons does not recommend liposuction for patients with certain health conditions including:

  • Heart disease
  • Clotting problems
  • Diabetes
  • Poor circulation

In addition, we encourage patients to attempt to lose weight on their own before seeking liposuction. The risks of liposuction increase in people who are obese, so it is best to try to achieve your optimum body weight before getting liposuction.

Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a “wetting solution” with a local anesthetic into the treatment area, which causes blood vessels to constrict. This minimizes blood loss and reduces postsurgical pain and bleeding. The fat is then broken up and suctioned out of the body. This technique is the standard of care when it comes to liposuction and offers beautiful, natural-looking results.

The amount of fat that can be removed with liposuction depends on your body type, weight, and amount of excess fat. Surgeons need to follow safety guidelines, the amount of fat that can be removed safely with liposuction at one time is about 5 litters.

Fat will not return and the result will remain intact if you are able to maintain a stable weight. Unfortunately, it is possible for fat to return after liposuction if you do not maintain your weight. The more weight you gain after liposuction, the less dramatic the result will be.
