Pre- and Post- Operative Care for Facial Surgery

Facial surgery is a significant procedure, and following the right steps before and after your operation is essential for the best results and a smooth recovery. Below is a summary of key information from our pre- and post- op patient booklet to guide you through the process.

BEFORE YOUR SURGERY

  • Medications & Supplements
    • Stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatories, herbal supplements, and Vitamin E at least two weeks before surgery, as these can increase bleeding risk.
    • Inform your surgeon about all medications you are taking.
  • Smoking & Alcohol
    • Stop smoking at least six weeks before surgery. Smoking interferes with healing and increases the risk of complications.
    • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before your procedure.
  • Preparing Your Skin
    • Use a gentle facial cleanser and moisturizer in the weeks leading up to surgery.
    • Do not use harsh scrubs or have facials, waxing, or laser treatments for two weeks before surgery.
  • Day Before Surgery
    • Wash your hair and face thoroughly.
    • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight unless instructed otherwise.
    • Remove all nail polish, jewelry, and makeup.
    • Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
  • What to Bring
    • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that opens in the front.
    • All prescribed medications.
    • Personal identification and insurance information.

AFTER YOUR SURGERY

  • Immediate Care
    • Rest with your head elevated to reduce swelling.
    • Use cold compresses as instructed to minimize bruising and discomfort.
    • Take prescribed medications as directed.
  • Wound Care
    • Keep incisions clean and dry.
    • Follow your surgeon’s instructions for cleaning and caring for the surgical area.
    • Do not apply makeup or creams to the incision sites until cleared by your surgeon.
  • Activity
    • Avoid strenuous activity, bending, or heavy lifting for at least two weeks.
    • Do not smoke or drink alcohol during your recovery.
    • Avoid sun exposure and wear a hat or use sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Follow-Up
    • Attend all scheduled post-operative appointments.
    • Contact your surgeon if you experience unusual pain, swelling, bleeding, or signs of infection.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery

  • Prepare your home in advance with soft foods, extra pillows, and entertainment.
  • Arrange for help with daily activities for several days after surgery.
  • Be patient with swelling and bruising—these are normal and will subside over time.
