Transferring fat from one area of the body to another is typically associated with cosmetic procedures that improve the appearance of the face and buttocks. However, fat grafting is a versatile cosmetic technique that the Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons at Gawley Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale, AZ can use to address many more areas of the body, including the breasts, hands, and feet. Fat grafting is a natural long-lasting solution that can be used as an alternative to implants or facial fillers.
Fat grafting isn’t just for cosmetic procedures. Dr. Bryan Gawley and Dr. Jennifer A. Geoghegan can also use it to achieve therapeutic benefits for tissue damage caused by radiation therapy.
How Is Fat Grafting Performed?
Step 1: Extraction of Fat From the Donor Area: this step is usually carried out by making a small incision and extracting fat by liposuction through a cannula. Liposuction can also be performed by laser or ultrasound, but these techniques destroy fat cells which makes them unsuitable for grafting.
Step 2: Processing Removed Fat: After extraction, the fat is put in a centrifuge to remove debris, dead cells, and excess fluid. An alternative method is to wash the extracted fat in a sterile saline solution. Whichever technique is used, the intent is to separate living fat cells from dead matter in the extracted tissue.
Step 3: Reinjection to the Desired Body Part: The plastic surgeon then re-injects the fat into the desired area in small droplets. This gradual re-introduction is done to enable each droplet to develop the blood supply necessary for the fat to survive in its new location.
Reshaping the body with the right amount of fat to achieve the desired results requires both artistry and surgical skill.
