Your recovery from your Phoenix tummy tuck will depend on factors including your health and physical fitness prior to surgery, your body’s natural healing ability, the type of tummy tuck you have had performed, and your willingness to follow your surgeon’s postoperative advice. Your board-certified Phoenix tummy tuck surgeon will work with you after your procedure to help ensure proper recovery, but it is vital you follow his instructions to help reduce your risk for unnecessary complications.
Recovering from a Tummy Tuck
Depending on the type of tummy tuck you have had performed, you may need to spend the night following your procedure in a hospital. Whether or not this is the case after your tummy tuck, your mobility will be impacted for the first few days, making it necessary to arrange for assistance during this time.
Discomfort, bruising, and swelling are common. Pain can be handled through medications prescribed by your surgeon. Swelling can be reduced with the use of a compression garment and, when necessary, drains. Bruising will subside on its own.
Most people can resume working within one to two weeks, but it may take up to four weeks depending on your occupation and speed of recovery. Strenuous activities will need to be avoided for several weeks, but a mild exercise routine can and should be resumed after one week. Walking is generally best as it helps increase blood flow and reduce swelling without placing undue stress on your body. Your surgeon will advise you when it is okay to resume all of your activities.
