Who’s a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Who’s a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is an extremely popular cosmetic surgery option. Many people that consider liposuction have heard the name, but may not know details about this cosmetic surgery procedure. It’s important to know your options with liposuction and how you can benefit, and the best way to get started is by scheduling a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons at Gawley Plastic Surgery. In the meantime, here’s what to know about who should consider liposuction and what to expect.

You may be a good candidate if you have stubborn fat.

If you’ve hit your weight loss goals but still have stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise, liposuction can help. Liposuction works best when it can put the finishing touches on your new body for more refined contours and improved shape, rather than eliminating fat that can be addressed with traditional weight loss methods.  To be a good candidate for liposuction, it is typically recommended that you be within about ten pounds of your ideal weight loss goal.

You may not be a good candidate if you have loose skin

Traditional liposuction simply removes stubborn fat pockets, meaning lax skin in the area won’t change. If you have loose skin, you’ll need to consider additional options (whether surgical or non-surgical) to remove or shrink loose skin. During a consultation, our board-certified plastic surgeons at Gawley Plastic surgery will be able to determine what procedure or combination of procedures is best to reach your cosmetic goals.  It is usually preferred that you have good skin tone and elasticity in your treatment area to be considered a good candidate for liposuction.

You may be a good candidate if your weight is stable

If you’ve lost significant weight or recently recovered from childbearing, our board-certified plastic surgeons often recommend that you wait for a period of time to ensure that your weight is maintained. This ensures that you’ve established healthy habits that will carry you through your recovery period and beyond. If you’re subject to weight fluctuations because of hormones or lifestyle, then you may want to wait on your liposuction procedure so that you won’t need a repeat procedure in the future.  During your consultation at Gawley Plastic Surgery, we will determine the best time to schedule your liposuction surgery.

You may not be a good candidate if you want to lose weight with liposuction

Liposuction should not be considered a weight loss surgery. It works best on small amounts of stubborn fat that don’t respond to traditional methods rather than a way to lose weight. Although you might see minor changes in the number on the scale, liposuction is best to help you lose inches rather than pounds. It’s important to have the right expectation so that our surgeons can help you adjust your weight loss goals accordingly.
