Round vs. Teardrop Breast Implants

Round vs. Teardrop Breast Implants

There are essentially two different shapes for breast implants – round and teardrop. The shape of your implant will have a dramatic impact on the appearance of your new breasts. At your initial consultation with one of our Scottsdale plastic surgeons, he will review these options with you in great detail and work with you to arrive at the best choice for your unique body type and aesthetic goals.

Round Implants

Round implants are by far the most common breast implant option used during breast augmentation procedures. These implants are spherical in shape, and they provide the greatest amount of lift, fullness, and cleavage. Round implants can either have smooth or textured surfaces, and since the implant is symmetrical, you will not have to be concerned about implant rotation. For most people, this will provide the most natural looking breast shape.

Teardrop Implants

Teardrop implants have more fullness on bottom than on top. As a result, your breast can achieve a more gently sloping contour with this type of implant. However, there are certain drawbacks to teardrop breast implants:

• They only come in textured surfaces
• If the implant rotates, your breast may appear distorted
• They are more expensive than round implants

For these reasons, our surgeons generally only recommends teardrop implants for women with little or no natural breast tissue. In most other cases, he prefers to use round implants.
