No matter your age, if you are healthy enough for surgery, you can have breast augmentation. About 90% of women have their breast augmentations in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, but a significant number of women still have the procedure performed in their 50s or older, although their goals are often different.

This page gives some basic background information, but can’t make recommendations based on your health and cosmetic goals. During your consultation, we can discuss the concerns you may have about getting breast augmentation when you are older. Is Breast Augmentation the Right Procedure for You?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure intended to increase the size and improve the shape of your breasts using breast implants. If you are primarily looking to reduce sagging as a result of age, then a breast lift may be the right procedure for you. You may need a lift if:

  • Your breasts are sagging
  • You are unhappy with the position or downward orientation of your nipples
  • You are happy with the size of your breasts

Sometimes, a breast augmentation with lift can be performed if you desire increased volume as well as correction of the shape of your breasts.
If, on the other hand, you have been diagnosed with cancer, breast reconstruction is the procedure that is used to replace breasts removed with a mastectomy.

Breast Augmentation for Older Women: Additional Concerns

Once you have determined that breast augmentation is the right procedure for you, it is important to consider a few additional factors to ensure you will get the best results from the procedure.
First, consider your general health. Many older women are in the best shape of their lives, but if you are not in good health, you may not be a good candidate for surgery. We will talk to you about your general health during your consultation to make sure you are a good surgical candidate.

Next, consider your skin health. The health of your skin will have a significant impact on how well your breasts are able to support your breast implants. This will affect the quality and longevity of your results. Consider scarring, too, and whether your skin seems to heal as well as it did when you were younger. We will talk to you about how your skin condition will affect your breast augmentation results and give advice on how you can take care of your skin to maintain your results.

Finally, it is worth considering the impact breast implants may have on your future cancer screenings. Breast implants do reduce the visibility of your breasts during a mammogram, so it’s possible they may delay detection of breast cancer. However, studies have shown that breast implants have no impact on cancer mortality–they neither increase your risk of breast cancer or decrease your chances of getting positive results from cancer treatment. Submuscular placement is recommended to improve the visibility of your breast tissue and can also increase support of your breast implants.

No matter your age, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation.
