Breast Augmentation and Mammogram/Cancer Screening

Breast Augmentation and Mammogram/Cancer Screening

Your Scottsdale breast augmentation procedure should not interfere with cancer screening. Additionally, there is no evidence that having breast augmentation increases your risk for breast cancer. During your initial breast augmentation consultation with one of our Scottsdale plastic surgeons, this concern can be fully addressed, and procedural options that can reduce mammogram complications can be discussed.

Breast Implant Placement

Having breast augmentation will not interfere with cancer screening, but may make mammograms less effective. Much of this depends on your breast implant placement. Breast implants placed below the muscles in your chest won’t interfere with mammograms in any way. However, those placed above the chest may impact mammograms, requiring additional diagnostic tests to check for cancer.

With both placement options, it is important that you tell your doctor you have had breast augmentation. An experienced technician who specializes in cancer detection following breast augmentation will be able to read your mammogram correctly no matter where your implants have been placed.

Gawley Plastic Surgery surgeons will be happy to discuss what to expect after breast augmentation and steps necessary to ensure your health during your initial consultation.
